First People’s House

First Peoples’ House is a residence, gathering place and resource centre that provides Aboriginal students attending McGill with a “home away from home”, where they can find support and encouragement to succeed in their studies and remain connected to their culture. Lucky for us, friends from the First People’s House came to visit the Homework Zoners while it was lunchtime. The multicourse meal was both vegetarian and absolutely delicious, including fresh guacamole with tortillas, sweet potato fries, pasta salad, carrot cupcakes and chocolate chip cookies. Yum.

While eating, Homework Zoners received an engaging presentation about the histories and cultures of some aboriginal peoples, including Iroquois and Mohawk. As a surprise, Sonny the Elder came out in full regalia to get everyone’s toes tappin’!

Students from all schools joined together in a circle to dance to traditional music.  Learning new dance moves, as well as opening our eyes to different histories, was a great way to end the day!
